OWU Legends Featured in GeezerJock Magazine

The Ohio Wesleyan University Legends had high hopes for the Florida Lacrosse Classic, which was held Jan. 20 to 22 in Weston, Fla. The Legends had won the Super Grand Masters (51-and-over) division of the tournament in 2005.

The Legends’ Grand Masters (45-and-over) squad had also performed reasonably well last year, taking fifth place. But 53-year-old Steve Corrigan, captain of the Legends for the Florida tournament, said his teams played terribly. “We were 0-4 in the Grand Masters, and 2-4 in Super Grand Masters,” he said.

Ohio Wesleyan alumni have a proud tradition. The university has been a Division II and Division III powerhouse since the 1970s. But in the Classic, both Legends squads were embarrassed by their play, particularly on offense. “We couldn't hit the cage,” Corrigan said.

He acknowledged that age contributed to the teams’ weak performance, particularly in the Grand Masters bracket. “The age difference is amazing,” Corrigan said. “You’d never think that the difference between 45 and 50 would be that great.”

None of this prevented the squad from having a good time off the field. “We had a tailgate party on Thursday after our practice. When we drank that dry we went to the bar,” Corrigan said. The Florida Lacrosse Classic attracted 27 teams, including four in the women’s division. The tournament raises money for the Florida Youth Lacrosse Foundation.
